Saint Anne's Helpers

Saint Anne was the wife of Saint Joachim, mother of Our Lady and grandmother of Jesus Christ. The story of Saint Anne as written in the Gospel of James was very popular among early Christians. According to the Gospel, Anne and Joachim were childless for many years.  Anne vowed to God to dedicate her child to Him if she could become pregnant. She dedicated Mary to God when she was three years old.

Tradition tells us that Mary and Joseph were married when Mary was only 14 years old.  After Jesus was born, Mary and Joseph returned to Nazareth where they would live and bring up their young son. Ann and Joachim visited them there and helped to care for the child. They told Jesus many stories about Adam and Eve, David and Goliath, Moses and the Ten Commandments. They watched Jesus play and walk; they fed him his favorite meals, bathed him, and gently rocked him to sleep.

A later tradition says when Ann and Joachim died that Jesus was with them when they passed away.
